Album Launch: The Sandersons
Music has accompanied the decade that Jo and I have shared a friendship. Meeting through baby music groups at the local community centre we spent many sugar fuelled afternoons helping our daughters grow in their musical confidence before watching them flourish at YMM as they explored different classes and threw themselves into rollicking ukulele performances that we loved being in the audience for.
Having put our daughters on the stage we started to realise our own creative impulses were beating again. Jo is an accomplished instrumentalist and singer and was starting to try her hand at songwriting. I was a singer manqué who had, for many years, secretly written songs in my bedroom that I never expected to see the light of day. But having returned to singing lessons through YMM I remembered my love of voice and lyrics. Jo and I started sharing songs that we had written, grabbing moments in the YMM café to practise harmonies and hone lyrics which our kids loved to play along to in-between classes.
Bringing 3 more instrumentalists on board we whipped up a set list to share with friends in Jo’s living room which soon grew into a regular lounge night, Sanderson Sessions. Featuring our band The Sandersons and guest acts from the local musical community and beyond, the lounge nights have been generating a growing following, many of whom are active in the YMM community. We have stepped out of the lounge to perform atop barges, at festivals in London and the Midlands and even in an 18th century cockpit, before turning our attentions to the recording studio.
